Measurements: 9” circumference, 7” length (standard size)

Vegetarian Burrito $4.64 after tax.

Pinto Beans: vegetarian

Red Spanish Rice: vegetarian

A few blocks south of the UCLA campus lies the curiously named Jose Bernstein’s.  Clean simple vegetarian burrito, and a small but sweet salsa bar: pico de gallo, spicy verde and thick and spicy rojo.  Seems like burritos tend to be better when they are in close proximity to large college campuses.

They’re famous for their Galbi (Korean BBQ) burrito, which they were making years before the Twittering Taco Trucks.  Parking is really tough around here, but they deliver to the area and are open late: Sunday through Thursday open until 1am, Friday and Saturday open until 2am.

Pico de Gallo (less jalapenos) (center); spicy tomatillo based verde (left); spicy rojo with a hint of nutmeg and Eastern spices (right)

Value: Very, Very Good

I definitely need to hit this spot again before I can comment with authority, but my initial first impression of the place was marginal at best. I do recall a gregarious and enthusiastic owner and comely co-eds, which I suppose merits some bonus points. The low price is Mariela’s-esque. But the idea that Pastrami and Tuna sandwiches are being made alongside my burrito makes me feel wobbly, and the company name is regrettable. Hold the cole slaw.
