Veggie Burrito $5.76 after tax

About 10 years ago, as a young apprentice, I thought Mrs. Garcia’s made the best vegetarian burritos in Los Angeles.  Perfectly made with a dense Mission-esque form.  Two locations (one on the border of Venice and Marina Del Rey), their salsas were always fresh, and the burritos were top-notch.  Now they’re down to one location, in Culver City, plagued with inconsistency, particularly at the salsa bar.  At times their verde is closer to an Indian chutney.  All that being said, the base recipes are still there, and every once in a while they churn out greatness.

Taco Miendo: you probably haven’t heard the name before? But remember it.  The name combines the overlapping words taco and comiendo (meaning “eating” in Spanish).  One of the best values in town (will make my top 10 list), but with two inconspicuous locations they are easy to overlook.  Opened in 2000, Culver City, was their first spot.  Simple strait forward burrito: black or pinto beans, rice, pico de gallo and jack cheese.  They make their own fresh tortillas and have a nice salsa bar.  None of the salsas are much hotter than a medium, but all are rich with flavor in their own right. I can’t quite figure out how to describe the yellow chunky salsa (between the green and red in the photo).  I asked someone who worked there “what”s it called”, they didn’t know; so it will remain a mystery.  Taco Miendo is not convenient for me, but I have unfinished business there, and like General MacArthur said to the Philippines “I shall return”.
