This place has pulled off totally satisfying the traditional authentic LA Mexican food crowd, the gringos, the foodies, the locals, and me: everyone likes this place.  Firm fresh black beans, pico de gallo (not so gallo). Red sauce with nutmeg, or is it cinnamon?  Long extensive menu, but not confusing, with appropriate options, all of which are good.  Very simple, not reinventing the wheel.  If they put more care into crafting their salsa this place could possibly blow my mind.

On paper this should be one of the best burritos in the area.  Unique yet authentic environment, with Santa Monica flavor; Clean fresh ingredients and homemade salsa.  But, somehow it doesn’t come together right.  Reminds of the type of burrito place you find in Manhattan or Brooklyn.  I like the traditional restaurant style fresh red salsa, but the spicy green has a pickling spice flavor that doesn’t jibe with me.  Grilled tortillas, black refried beans or whole pinto, and decent guacamole, if I sound negative it’s only because I had really high hopes.

If you like Baja Fresh, Poquito Mas does something simular, only better.  Fresher, better aestetics, and the staff and menu just plain “get it”.  If this place wanted to expand nationally, I’d invest.  The downside: if you objectively analyze the food, it’s not amazing.  The salsa bar looks better than it tastes with heavily gringofied salsas, none of which is remotely spicy or particularly flavorful.

Black Beans or Refried Beans

Value: Very Good (one of their mottos high quality and low cost).

“Just $5” for a vegetarian burrito

Food across the board is above average for lunch accommodations (especially for the price).Ripe looking salsa bar.  Black mole-esque salsa (semi-BBQ tasting), Verde that is hot and limey, Rojo (watered down thai sauce with Mexican spices), and pico de gallo that is acceptable. Going to Del Taco or Taco Bell should be an arrest-able crime as long as Fast Taco is close.
